Articulating an American Aesthetic: Franck von der Lancken

This exhibition features an in-depth study of the work of Frank von der Lancken, an early 20th-century American painter and art educator. It is curated by class of 2014 art-history majors Britton Chance, Virginia Dudley, Margot Eberle, Shayna Goodman, Sarah Howard, Elizabeth Key, Jessica Moran, Marie Petersen, Lauren Sullivan, Rachel Weber, and Christina Wolf under the direction of Melinda Schlitt, professor of art & art history. The show runs from Feb. 22-April 13.

Blacksmith and sculptor Ellen Durkan creates fantastical wearable constructions for women out of semiprecious metals, steel and a variety of ordinary materials. This exhibition includes her conceptual designs and final pieces—and all of the spaces between them.

The Weiner Lecture in the Fine Arts Presents: What is Going On in Jacques-Louis David’s “Sappho and Phaon?”

Distinguished art critic and art historian Michael Fried has written and lectured about abstract painting and sculpture since World War II.

The Jane L. and Robert H. Weiner Lecture in the Fine Arts presents the distinguished art critic and art historian Michael Fried, J.R. Herbert Boone Chair in the Humanities and professor of art history at the Johns Hopkins University. He has written and lectured extensively about abstract painting and sculpture since World War II, specializing in French painting and art criticism from the mid-18th century to the advent of Edouard Manet and his generation, as well as the works of Bernd and Hilla Becher and contemporary photographers Jeff Wall, Thomas Struth, Adreas Gursky and Thomas Demand, among others. Recent research examines Caravaggio and the transformation of 17th-century Italian painting.

Senior Studio Art majors will exhibit works in a variety of mediums, including sculpture, drawing, painting, photography, video and ceramics. During the opening reception the artists will be available to discuss their ongoing work, which will culminate in an April exhibition at The Trout Gallery. Lunchtime Session: Scanning images for papers and presentations

October 30th, 2012 | 12pm-12:40pm | Weiss 219

In approximately forty minutes we will cover:

  • An introduction to the scanner (turning on, off, icons and software)
  • Using the scanner guide (preview and pre-selections before scanning)
  • Saving the image(s)
  • Scanning the image(s)
  • Formatting

Because this workshop is based on technical skills and software, the maximum number of people that can attend are 5. If this events fills, I will contact you immediately and we can schedule another session for individual instruction and/or we will post a future date for another scanning workshop.

ARTstor Workshop for students

If you’re a student and you want to learn how ARTstor can assist you, don’t hesitate in coming to this workshop.

In approximately thirty minutes we will cover:

  • registering for an account
  • searching for images (exploding and narrowing your search)
  • uploading images into your account
  • producing folders and image groups
  • reviewing image groups without being signed-in to your account
  • saving individual images and details of images onto your computer
  • exporting images into a PowerPoint Presentation onto your computer
  • ARTstor mobile for iPhone, iPad, and Android
  • and if there’s time–using ARTstor’s Presentation System, Offline Image Viewer (OIV)

Naïve art, a genre characterized by its rejection of artistic conventions and its celebration of extraordinary materials and techniques, fascinates artists and collectors alike. fresh, childlike and surprising, this exhibition focuses on prints, paintings, drawings, vinyl covers, and sculpture culled from private collections and borrowed from local antique shops. The show will continue through September 23rd. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served during the opening. The event is open to the public.

Anthony Wolking: Contextualized

Kentucky based ceramic artist, Anthony Wolking, explores the economics and consumption of pottery in this exhibition. This installation will further explore ideas by incorporating mixed media and found objects, while encouraging viewer interaction and participation. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.
